Pope Leo XIV cast an absentee ballot in Illinois to vote in the US midterm elections, per NBC News. The Pope's action marks a historic moment as he becomes the first pope in history to legally participate in a U.S. general election.

The Vatican explained that Pope Leo's legal right to vote stems from his status as a citizen of the Holy See, though he is not officially part of the U.S. political system. Bloomberg reports this unique situation arises from the complex legal framework surrounding the Holy See's sovereignty and citizenship laws.

This unprecedented move highlights the intersection of religious leadership and democratic participation in the United States. The Vatican emphasized that the Pope's vote was a personal expression of civic engagement, not an endorsement of any political party or candidate.
