Chinese ships have been spotted conducting surveillance activities near Taiwan's waters, per Taipei Times. The vessels were observed in the Taiwan Strait, prompting concern from local authorities.

Beijing has increased maritime patrols around Taiwan, leading Taipei to dispatch its own vessels to shadow the Chinese ships, reports SCMP. This move escalates tensions in the region amid ongoing cross-strait disputes.

Taipei is also protesting against what it describes as APEC 'discrimination' in a separate development, according to Taiwan's official media. The city's stance highlights diplomatic challenges and growing regional scrutiny of China's actions.

Meanwhile, a tight mayoral race looms in Taipei, with some analysts suggesting it could further inflame cross-strait tensions, SCMP notes. The political developments add another layer of complexity to the island's strategic environment.
