Woodcarvers in Suriname's rainforest face growing allure of gold mining and logging industries, per nwaonline.com. The traditional craft is being abandoned as lucrative alternatives emerge.

The Saamaka woodcarvers are especially impacted by the pull of illegal economic activities, Bloomberg reports. These communities have historically relied on sustainable forest use for their livelihoods.

Suriname's government denies involvement in illegal wiretapping accusations, thethestkittsnevisobserver.com notes. The claims come amid heightened scrutiny of surveillance practices in the region.
