Rotuma is calling for legal protection of its traditional land rights, per FBC News. The move comes as the island seeks greater autonomy under a new Constitution Bill.

The bill opens a pathway toward Rotuma independence, FBC News reports. Local leaders argue that existing laws do not adequately recognize the unique status of the island's indigenous communities.

Meanwhile, the Methodist Church has urged Fiji's government to return to constitutional processes, per FBC News. The church emphasizes the need for dialogue ahead of any legislative changes affecting Rotuma.
